The Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 by voice vote without a debate amid persistent Opposition protests over the alleged police crackdown on students during the July 20 Parliament march.
The Opposition demanded the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised members for refusing to participate in the discussion on the legislation. The bill seeks to tighten norms for delayed registration of births and deaths by requiring an order from a judicial magistrate (first class) for registrations made more than two years after the event, while also updating legal terminology in line with the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
The legislation now awaits Rajya Sabha approval. In the Upper House, Opposition MPs continued to press for a statement from Amit Shah on the alleged use of force against protesting students and also raised issues including alleged irregularities in land acquisition for the Ayodhya Ram Temple and paper leaks, as disruptions dominated proceedings.
Speaker Om Birla adjourned the Lok Sabha till 12 noon on Friday as sloganeering and protests by Opposition members disrupted proceedings.

Independent MP Pappu Yadav and other Opposition leaders staged a symbolic protest at Parliament's Makar Dwar on Friday, enacting an alleged "theft" of donations collected for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Saffron-clad Pappu Yadav sat with donation boxes placed near the Parliament entrance, while MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, put money into the boxes as part of the skit. Yadav then slipped the money into his pockets to depict the Opposition's allegations.
