The Sahitya Akademi was formally launched in March 1954. Though set up by the government, it functions as an autonomous organisation, which was registered as a society on January 7, 1956, under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Akademi has five regional offices in Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Agartala.
