When director Aneesh Anwar rang up singer Ranjini Jose one day and briefed her about his movie Basheerinte Premalekhanam, she was nonplussed. The singer didn’t understand why the director had to brief the script towards a singer.

It is then that she understood he was offering her the character of Laila, the sister of the protagonist. Her initial reaction was ‘no’, but as soon as she heard Aneesh’s script, Renjini decided she was doing it.
The singer, who had earlier acted with Mammootty and Mohanlal, says she plays the role of Farhan’s sister in the movie. “Acting was nowhere on my mind when Aneesh called me. I was determined to say no. But the character Laila was enticing. I don’t have much of a screen space, but the scope of the character  to emote is huge. As an actor, this is a very great oppurtunity because Laila needs to be played in a subtle way,” says Renjini.

The singer-turned-actor is all praise for her director. “Aneesh, as all of us know, has done some good movies in the past. Both Zachariyayude Garbinikal and Kumbasaram were known as good movies. So, it came as a major confidence boost for me that he placed total trust in me to do Laila. I think I am not a good actor but he said I did pull it off,” says Renjini.
The movie, which is likely to hit the theatres, next month, has Farhan Faasil and Sana Althaf in lead roles.
