In order to implement the directions of the Supreme Court, the Centre on Thursday decided to constitute a 3-member supervisory committee on the Babli project issue.
The meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the proposal to constitute the committee with the representative of Central Water Commission as chairman and one representative each from governments of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra as members. The Supreme Court had given directions to the Central government on February 28 to form the supervisory committee.
Andhra Pradesh has been objecting to the construction of Babli project by Maharashtra in the submergence area of Sri Ram Sagar Project.
In July 2006, the Andhra Pradesh government filed a case in the Supreme Court against Maharashtra and the Union Government and asked the apex court to grant a permanent injunction restraining Maharashtra from undertaking or proceeding with the construction of Babli project.
