CHANDIGARH: The Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh police have arrested an army soldier belonging to Himachal Pradesh, for allegedly supplying secret information to ISI intelligence agency of Pakistan.
Sources said that Suneet, 20, of Antreta village near Palampur, was arrested by the ATF on Friday. The police recovered some documents, a laptop and mobile phone. He had joined the army in 2012 and was posted in Supply Corps in Meerut.
The police closed in on Suneet after arresting Asif Ali, an ISI agent, on August 17, who had informed the police that Suneet was his accomplice.
The police then got in touch with the Army authorities and with help of Military Intelligence, they picked Suneet from his village, after tracking his movements.
Suneet’s father had retired from the Army as subedar and the whole village is in a state of shock after the arrest.
During questioning, Suneet told the police that he befriended a ‘Poonam’ on Facebook a few days ago. She then asked him some questions about the Army and had promised to gift him a laptop.
“We suspect the laptop was gifted to him by Asif,” said an officer, adding the police are now trying to ascertain how much information Suneet has given the ISI. Police sources claim the ISI has adopted a new modus operandi, in which they interact with soldiers through Facebook accounts of females, extracting valuable information out of them, after giving them expensive gifts.
