NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday called on the people to follow the path of compassion, truth and peace as shown by Guru Nanak, the first Sikh religious leader.

"I bow to the venerable Guru Nanak (Devji) on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The life and teachings of Guru Nanak (Devji) inspire us eternally. Let us follow the path of compassion, truth and peace as shown by him," Modi said in a tweet.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru.

He added: "Today is also a day to pledge to embrace the path of service and work towards a just and equal society, free from any kind of social evils."
