BHOPAL: A 26-year-old police constable allegedly shot himself with his service rifle on the Baihar additional SP office premises in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh.

The constable, identified as Ramu Baghel, a native of MP's Bhind district, shot himself in the chest from point blank range on Sunday late night. "He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival," Balaghat superintendent of police Amit Sanghi told The New Indian Express on Monday.

Baihar police sources said that no suicide note has been recovered from the spot. But primary investigations revealed that Baghel's marriage was fixed with the daughter of a policeman posted in Bhind district. Recently, Baghel decided against marrying the girl, after which the girl's father got a case of dowry harassment registered against Baghel and family members.

"Baghel showed his colleague a news clip of him and his family having been booked in a false dowry harassment case in Bhind Kotwali of Bhind district. It seems the episode took a toll on Baghel's psyche and ultimately triggered the suicide," said a senior Balaghat police officer.
