NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday clarified its stance on the move to change the name of Dayal Singh Evening College, affiliated to Delhi University, to Vande Matram College, saying it was not the government’s decision and it has been put on hold. The college’s governing body had announced the decision last month.

Shiromani Akali Dal member Naresh Gujral said in the Rajya Sabha, “To change the name of a minority institution is a direct assault on the feelings of Sikhs... I feel this is something to be condemned.”

Responding to this, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “It is not the (Central) government’s decision and the government does not like it. That’s why we have asked the decision be withheld forthwith.”
