MUMBAI: Congress workers held protests against the release of Madhur Bhandarkar's new film Indu Sarkar and disrupted its screening at various theatres across the state including Jalgaon, Pune, Thane, Kalyan, Nashik and Nanded, on Friday.
However, the party distanced itself from the protests and said that it was not opposed to the screening of the film. In Pune, youth Congress held peaceful demonstrations against the screening of the film at Deccan theatre, while in Jalgaon, party office bearers from the city and district units pulled down posters of the film and forced theatre owners to stop screening the movie.
The Congress workers said that the film, made against the backdrop of Emergency, wrongly depicts former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi.
Senior party leader and former union minister P Chidambaram had said last week that the party had nothing against the film and they did not endorse parallel censorship.
