MUMBAI: After a series of 58 huge yet silent protest marches across the state, the Maratha community has decided to take out the biggest ever protest march in Mumbai on August 9.
“At recent meetings, Sakal Marath Samaj – the apex body of the community, formed a steering committee to take the agitation forward and accordingly biggest ever march would be taken out in Mumbai to mark completion of one year of the protest marches,” Sanjiv Bhor, a member of the steering committee, said here on Wednesday.
“The community has already submitted memorandum with a list of 20 prime demands by the community to the state government.
A committee to initiate dialogue with the government too has been formed and we expect the dialogue to begin soon,” Rajendra Kondhare, another member of the steering committee said.
The leaders also appealed the members of the community to gather at fort Raigad – capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – on June 6, the day of his coronation, for an oat taking ceremony. “We are expecting the numbers to be huge,” Shantaram Kunjir said.
He too is a member of the steering committee. After the oath taking ceremony, the community leaders would gather at Pathardi in Ahmednagar district on July 13, the day when a minor girl from the community was gang-raped and murdered in Pathardi, to decide details of the protest march in Mumbai.
