NEW DELHI: There is a sharp decline in the number of complaints received by the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) this year. According to the NCM, it has witnessed a decline of 20 per cent in complaints. The commission this year, on average, received four complaints a day. It was six per day last year. This year, a total of 1,647 complaints were received, compared to 1,974 in 2015-16. In a majority of cases, the complainants were Muslims, according to data compiled by the commission.
The NCM, set up to safeguard the interests of minorities under the Constitution and laws enacted by Parliament and state legislatures, received 281 complaints until June 7 this year.
Of the complaints it received last year, 1,231 were by Muslims, the largest of the six minority communities. It got 102, 96, 38, three and 35 complaints from Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains, respectively. There were 142 grievances which were not related to any of these communities. A total of 944 complaints pertained to law and order.
The NCM registered 147, 102, 46, 33 and six complaints related to services, education, religious rights, Waqf and economic matters. The commission disposed of 1,523 cases last year.
