The National Commission for Minorities on Thursday appealed to all political parties to lend their support to the triple talaq Bill to ensure its passage in Parliament in the ongoing monsoon session.

NCM chairman Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi told Express, "The commission wants to request all political parties to come together to bring about a law against the practice of instant triple talaq. The criminalisation of this practice is a must for upliftment of the minorities in the country. We request everyone to support the Bill against instant triple talaq so that it is passed at the earliest, in this session itself."

The Lok Sabha has already passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill which seeks to criminalise instant triple talaq and will lead to imprisonment of up to three years and fine for Muslim men found guilty of indulging in this practice. The Bbill is pending approval from the Rajya Sabha.
