SRINAGAR: After the recovery of 11 mobile phones from the possession of detained leaders in Srinagar’s MLA hostel on Saturday, the authorities on Sunday said that the family members visiting the leaders would be thoroughly frisked.

According to police officials, use of mobile phones inside the MLA hostel is prohibited.

Police sources said investigations are on to ascertain how the mobile phones reached the detainees inside the sub-jail where over 35 detained leaders are lodged.

“All the phones will be thoroughly examined to find out who they called and were in touch with. We are also probing the possibility of this being a part of a bigger conspiracy to disturb the law and order situation in the Valley,” they said.

“The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as per jail manual would be further intensified to prevent smuggling of mobile phones and other items inside the sub jail,” a police official said.

Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti, who runs the leader’s twitter handle, condemned the search operation.

“Seems like manhandling detainees wasn’t enough J&K police on ADGs orders has raided MLA hostel, Srinagar & subjected detainees to humiliating frisking & checking. One assumes, certain J&K police officers drunk on newfound power are doing this to settle political scores,” she tweeted.
