GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, four of the six persons, who had escaped from a jail were lynched by a mob on Sunday.

The six undertrials had escaped from the prison on Saturday.

The lynching occurred at the remote Shangpung in West Jaintia Hills district of the state.

District Magistrate Batlang S Sohliya told The New Indian Express that he was waiting for the details from the magistrate at the site.

Police sources said I Love You Talang, a murder accused, was among the dead but the DM said, “The bodies are being brought to Jowai civil hospital and till they are identified, I cannot confirm it.”

He also said that he would submit a report to the state government for a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The police sources said after escaping from the Jowai jail, the six divided themselves into two groups of five and one. When some villagers of Shangpung spotted the five in the afternoon, they thrashed them. It was not clear if the fifth person was injured or he managed to escape.

I Love You was arrested recently along with Ramesh Dkhar in a double murder case. Dkhar was among the six who had escaped from the jail. His fate was not known.
