RANCHI: The 23-year-old woman, who had been set on fire allegedly for resisting rape attempts, succumbed to her burn injuries at a Ranchi hospital on Sunday morning. The incident took place on January 7 and the woman was under treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi with about 70 per cent burn injuries.
According to the statement recorded by her before police, four persons poured petrol over her for resisting the rape attempts made by them and set her on fire out of which three persons are her relatives. Hazaribag Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chothe confirmed that the woman died on Sunday morning during treatment at RIMS. Surprisingly, even after 15 days of incident, the four accused persons are still at large, despite the fact that a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to look into the case.
The police on the other hand, raised doubts over the incident stating that the SIT found no evidence against the four accused persons. “Moreover, a mismatch in statements given by the woman and her husband was found due to which other aspects are also being taken into consideration,” said Officer in Charge of Charhi Police Station Devendra Singh.
In addition to that, location of all the four accused persons was found in Ramgarh, which is far away from the place of occurrence, he added. The officer in charge also informed that FSL report also indicated that there had been no external entry into the house and in the CCTV footage of the nearby places had also
revealed that nobody had entered into the premises.
Therefore, role of the victim’s husband is also being scanned, apart from named accused persons in the FIR, he said. According to Singh, it is beyond imagination that a woman, who is the sister in law of the victim, could also be a part of the rape attempt along with her two sons. Meanwhile, the family members of the victim have demanded the arrest of all the four accused persons as soon as possible and without any delay.
