SRINAGAR: A militant has been killed in an encounter with security forces in Akhal forest area of South Kashmir on Saturday.

In a post on X, Army's Chinar Corps said intermittent and intense fire fight between the two sides continued through the night. "The troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far," the Army said.

The joint team of army, police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Akhal forest area of Kulgam yesterday evening after specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there.

Security officials suspect that a group of 3-4 militants are in the area and have been trapped in the cordon.

Additional troops have been rushed to the area to tighten the siege while troops were using and other equipment for aerial surveillance.

The new development has come after a recent encounter in the forest area of Dachigam in Harwan in the outskirts of Srinagar. Three Pakistani militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba, who were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, were killed. Among the three killed was Suleman Shah, the alleged mastermind of the attack.
