LUCKNOW: In a significant late-Sunday night operation, the Lucknow police arrested Umar Ansari, the younger son of gangster-turned-politician late Mukhtar Ansari, from the Darulshafa MLA residential complex.

The arrest was made by Ghazipur police, while conducting a raid at the residence of former Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA Abbas Ansari after tracking Umar’s location.

Abbas is the elder son of Mukhtar. He was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly after being convicted in a hate speech case and was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the police action against Umar Ansari, carried out on late Sunday night, on the charges of forgery and filing a fraudulent petition in court seeking the release of property registered in the name of his mother, Afshan Ansari, who is wanted in a number of cases and has been absconding.

Moreover, Afshan Ansari carries a reward of Rs 1 lakh on her arrest from Ghazipur and Mau police. The property in question was seized under the Gangster Act. The petition filed by Umar Ansari was purportedly submitted in the name of his mother. The police allege that Umar used forged signatures of his mother Afshan Ansari to support the petition.

Lawyer Liaquat Ali, who represented the case, had claimed in court that Afshan had personally signed the documents and sent them through Umar.

However, upon scrutiny by the state government counsel, the signatures on the documents did not match Afshan Ansari’s signatures in previous records.

This raised suspicion, particularly since Afshan has been declared a fugitive officially and cannot appear in court directly. A lookout notice has also been issued against her.

Investigators concluded that Umar, in collusion with his lawyer, attempted to mislead the court and tamper with judicial proceedings through forged documents—prompting the registration of a case under relevant IPC sections.

While Umar Ansari is now under arrest, his elder brother Abbas Ansari is already out on bail and has lost his MLA status following a two-year conviction. With both Ansari siblings now entangled in legal troubles, pressure is on the family.

A police chargesheet is expected soon, and officials have indicated that the case could lead to serious legal consequences, including recommendations for stricter judicial action against Umar.
