DORTMUND: Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Goetze's spell on the sidelines is set to continue because of "metabolic disturbances" diagnosed following recurring muscular problems.
"A comprehensive internal investigation into the possible causes" of Goetze's muscular issues revealed "metabolic disturbances, rendering it absolutely necessary to withdraw him from team training for the time being," Dortmund said Monday.
The 24-year-old Germany international has endured a frustrating season on his return to Dortmund from Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich, completing only four games in 11 league appearances. His last appearance was in the 1-1 draw at Mainz on Jan. 31, when he was taken off in the 66th minute.
Goetze had muscle problems pre-season. He was most recently ailed by a thigh muscle issue.
Sporting director Michael Zorc said the club was happy to have found the root of his problems and will give him full support to recover.
Goetze said on Dortmund's homepage that he was undergoing treatment and will do all in his power to be back in training and helping the team as soon as possible.
The latest injury-blow means Goetze will likely miss Germany's friendly with England in Dortmund on March 22, despite national team coach Joachim Loew publicly backing the player last week.
Goetze's extra-time goal against Argentina won the 2014 World Cup for Germany.
