Manchester United will have one last shot at Champions League qualification as they take on AFC Ajax in the Europa League final on Thursday. Express takes a look at the significance of this mouthwatering clash...

Domestic failure

After finishing sixth in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho’s men cannot afford any more mistakes. Though they have two titles (Community Shield, EFL Cup) this year, missing out on Champions League for the second consecutive year will be a big blow for the Red Devils. For Ajax, losing the league title to their fiercest rivals Feyenoord was hard. Also, the Dutch club are desperate for continental success as they have reached their first European final after 21 years.

No star-studded affair

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic is sure to miss the final, Mourinho will be more worried about his inconsistent defenders. Eric Bailly’s absence will be a big blow after the in-form Ivorian was shown a red card during the semifinal second-leg clash against Celta Vigo. With Marcos Rojo injured, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will fight for a starting spot. While Ajax will rely on their youth, the Dutch outfit is sure to miss the services of experienced defender Nick Viergever after he was shown a red card for two bookable offences.

Battle of the young

Both clubs have a reputation for their youth development policy. But it is Ajax who have come up with a more exciting squad. Justin Kluivert, who is the son of Ajax legend Patrick Kluivert, Kasper Dolberg and the 17-year-old Matthijs de Ligt are some of the young guns expected to take the field in Stockholm. Dolberg is their star man with 16 league goals this season. For Mourinho, Marcus Rashford will be key. The 19-year-old has been vital after bursting on to the scene last year.
