BERLIN: German football club FC Augsburg has announced that new striker Julian Schieber will be sidelined with a knee injury for several weeks.

The striker had to undergo surgery after problems with his left knee following a friendly match on Wednesday, the Bundesliga club announced.

"The doctors told us that the operation was successful. We wish Julian all the best for his rehabilitation," Augsburg's sporting director Stefan Reuter said.

After four injury-plagued years at Hertha Berlin, the 29-year-old had agreed to transfer to league rivals Augsburg after penning a three-year deal.

"The first few weeks at Augsburg have been extremely positive for me. Unfortunately, this injury is a setback during the preparations. However, I look forward positively and I am sure that I will emerge stronger from it," Schieber told the club's official website.
