NUZVID: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Nuzvid, 50 km from here, is buzzing with activity as students are evincing enthusiasm in `learning while doing’ concept being adopted by the institute. A first year student Rajkaran Singh, who secured 530 marks in Class X, hailing from Visakhapatnam, expressed happiness over securing a seat in IIIT, Nuzvid after seeing the environment and practical-oriented teaching procedure in the institute.
The IIITs will provide an opportunity to bring out the inherent talent among rural students, said IIIT, Nuzvid director Ibrahim Khan. He said the institute is a boon to rural students as it provides an opportunity of free education to rural students.
The then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy laid the foundation for the IIIT, Nuzvid on December 21, 2007 and it started functioning from last year.
Speaking to Express, the IIIT director said that Intermediate education will be imparted in the first two years, besides imparting English classes in the first year as students hail from the rural background.
He said from third year onwards, industrial-oriented teaching pattern will be adopted and priority will be given for practical training by entering into a tie-up with industries to train students as per the requirements of industries.
The director said that after completion of two years, students will be allowed to appear for competitive examinations, including BITSAT, and preparatory books will be supplied free of cost.
He said highly qualified mentors have been appointed for all classes.
They stay in the hostels to monitor the students performance and clear their doubts.
In order to enable students to face competition and develop innovative thinking, meetings and seminars with eminent persons are being organised periodically in the institute.
Central Government IT senior director GV Rama Raju visited the institute in the past and lauded the efforts of the head of the institution for providing global education to rural students. He said the IIITs will provide an opportunity to rural students to reach new heights.
Students will be awarded a B.Tech (IT) degree. They can possess an additional degree of MBA or MA simultaneously during their six years stay in the institute.
To instil confidence among students psychological session with BV Pattabhiram was also organised in the institute recently.
Ibrahim Khan said that additional hostel accommodation is getting ready for another 2000 students and mentors. He said proposals have been forwarded to the district collector seeking allotment of additional hundred acres of land to expand the institute being run under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies.
