HYDERABAD: If Telangana state is not formed after December, the kind of movement witnessed in 1969 will repeat itself in the region, Telangana NGO leaders have warned.
TNGO leaders submitted a memorandum to the Srikrishna committee, asserting that a separate Telangana state was the only solution to the problems being faced by employees from the region.
When the committee members asked them whether there was any remedy to the problems of employees other than creation of Telangana, the TNGOs categorically said that the only remedy was formation of Telangana.
They explained that though the NTR government had issued GO 610, the Chandrababu Naidu government constituted the Girglani committee and Rajasekhara Reddy tried to repatriate nonlocal employees, the Telangana employees did not benefit.
“The only chief minister who helped TNGOs is K Rosaiah who had a resolution adopted by the State Legislative Assembly opposing Hyderabad as a free zone,’’ TNGO president K Swamy Goud informed the committee.
The gross violation of promises like implementation of Mulki rule was the root-cause of the agitation amongst Telangana employees, they said. ``Had the Mulki rule been properly implemented, the Telangana people would have got due share in employment and promotions.
More and more non-locals were brought to fill government positions which led to frustration among the employees, students and unemployed youth of the region and the result of which was a mass agitation in 1969. Of the about 13 lakh jobs in government, local bodies, universities and public sector undertakings, the Telangana region should get a fair share of 42 pc i.e., 5.04 lakh. But, the region got only 3 lakh jobs.’’ Only a negligible number of state cadre and gazetted officer posts were occupied by people of Telangana. Of the 5,600 employees working in the Secretariat, hardly 8 pc were from Telangana, they said and stressed the need for a fair share for Telangana people in government jobs.
JAYASHANKAR MEETS PANEL: As requested by the committee, TRS ideologue K Jayasankar called on Srikrishna today and explained the economic viability of the Telangana region in case it is made a state. He explained that if the present state was divided, both Andhra and Telangana would become economically viable.
“Telangana has vast resources and its economy was strong before its merger with Andhra,’’ he said.
The Srikrishna committee will hear Rayalaseema and Andhra organisations, and industry representatives tomorrow.
