President of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Andhra Pradesh, Jaya Vindyala on Monday filed a petition in the High Court seeking directions to the Prakasam district police not to harass PUCL members by foisting false cases against them at the behest of Chirala MLA Amanchi Krishna Mohan.
The petitioner submitted that a nine-member PUCL fact-finding committee had visited Chirala in February to meet victims of the local Congress MLA and the circle inspector. The committee submitted its report to all government probing authorities to get justice, she said.
But, after the panel visit, the MLA and his henchmen attacked the house of PUCL district convenor and terrorised people who deposed before the committee, she informed the court. “Local CI Hyma Rao has foisted false cases against the committee members under various sections of the IPC. The CI has even warned of more cases if the fact-finding committee members failed to offer apologies to the MLA,” she said.
She further submitted that the MLA and the CI did not ‘permit’ the fact-finding committee members to enter Chirala to surrender and get bail in the false cases. She requested the court to declare the action of the local police illegal. The petitioner wanted the court to direct the government to forthwith provide protection to the PUCL members to go to Chirala to surrender and get bail from the local court.
