VISAKHAPATNAM: A patient who was on the death bed was saved by timely liver transplant surgery performed at city-based Care Hospitals. The rare transplant was performed on a 45-year-old Gurmeet Singh, whose condition is stable now.

Gurmeet Singh of Raipur in Chhattisgarh, approached Care Hospitals in the second week of November. Hospital’s liver transplant surgeon Tom Cherian said that when the patient was admitted, he was very weak, and after several tests, they came to know that he had a failure in the liver and kidney.

“The portal vein which supplies almost 70 per cent blood to the liver was blocked. Because of that Gurmeet’s life was in danger. He was not even in a position to take food. After a deep CT scan, we found liver transplantation as the option rather than a kidney, which is more complex and costly. However, it was also risky to remove the clot in blocked vessel,” said Tom. Taking a chance on November 20, the expert surgeon along with doctors David, Mohan Maharaj and G Sathyanarayana had performed the surgery after cadaveric organ was available. The surgery lasted for over eight-and-a-half hours, which was successful.

The doctors said that the patient is stable and was discharged Tuesday.
