VISAKHAPATNAM: A Naval officer ran his car over a daily-wager who was sleeping on the divider of the Assilmetta flyover in Visakhapatnam in the wee hours of Sunday, resulting in the latter's instantaneous death.
Driver's alcohol level withing permitted limit, say police Vizag ACP (traffic) Kinjarapu Prabhakar said an alcometer test was performed on Talwarkar. "The reading for Talwarkar was 18 and 19 for the other naval employee. According to norms, the permissible limit for blood alcohol for a driver is 29. A drunk driving case is registered if the aclometer reading is 30 and above," he said. "However, we have taken blood samples to determine the excact amount of alcohol," said the ACP. As of now, the II Town Police have registered a case under Section 304 of IPC, and another for causing damage to public property. |
The deceased has been identified as N Raju (20), a native of Vizianagaram. According to the police, Chinmayi Talwarkar (24), a sub-lieutenant of the Indian Navy, along with another naval employee and a civilian, was heading from Hotel Novotel to the naval base in his car.
Two Town traffic inspector Swamy Naidu said Talwarkar, who was driving, lost control and ran over Raju. The flower pots placed on the divider were damaged under the impact and Raju, who received severe head injuries, died on the spot. The three men in the car also received injuries.
However, the police did not reveal the names of the other two persons on board. Raju and his father, both daily wagers, came to the city in search of work 10 years ago. They used to sleep on road dividers or at bus shelters.
Upon information, police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured trio to hospital, and the body of Raju for a post-mortem operation. Raju's father lodged a complaint with the Two Town police, saying that the naval officer was driving under the influence of alcohol.
