Heavy rain pounds north coastal Andhra, CM Naidu takes stock of floods in Srikakulam

Moderate to heavy rain lashed parts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts since Monday night under the influence of low pressure over southwest Madhya Pradesh and its neighbourhood.

VIJAYAWADA/VISAKHAPATNAM: Moderate to heavy rain lashed parts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts since Monday night under the influence of low pressure over southwest Madhya Pradesh and its neighbourhood. The catchment area of Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers have received heavy inflows.

The inflow at Totapalli reservoir was pegged at 15,000 cusecs, out of which 12,000 cusecs was discharged to the sea on Tuesday. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has taken stock of the flood situation in Srikakulam and asked officials to take effective steps to restore normalcy.

Light drizzles were reported in parts of Visakhapatnam city, Kakinada, and parts of Prakasam district. Heavy rain pounded Vijayawada city late in the night. The rest of the state remained relatively dry with little or no rain. 

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed parts of Chattisgarh and Telangana on Monday night, due to which heavy inflows were received at Pedda Vagu and other streamlets in agency areas of West Godavari district. 

Road connectivity to several villages was cut off in Buttayagudem and Veluru Padu mandals on Tuesday morning and by evening, water had receded and normalcy restored.

The Rayalaseema region remained relatively dry.Several low lying areas of Vijayawada like Moghalrajpuram, One Town, Bhavanipuram and Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road got inundated and vehicular traffic affected due to rain at night.
