VISAKHAPATNAM: There should be anti-ragging committees in every college to strictly implement rules and wean away the students from the ragging practice, said joint collector-2 D Venkata Reddy. He was at the district-level coordination committee meeting on ragging at the Zilla Parishad meeting hall here on Monday.

All the students should have the contact numbers of committee members who can be contacted in case of any ragging incident.

Addressing the meeting, he said, “The only way to control ragging is by giving condign punishment to the students who rag new-comers. Students involved in ragging should be dismissed and given a notice to other colleges not to admit them.

The concerned college should also file an FIR at the nearest police station.” He wanted anti-ragging awareness camps conducted in all the colleges and display flexi boards on the laws related to ragging.

With a toll-free number and website provided in the complaint against ragging, the JC-II asked the college managements to respond once a complaint is lodged. He exhorted the students to make efforts in making Vizag ragging-free city in the district.

Addressing the college principals, AU registrar V Uma Maheswara Rao told the principals to organise fresher’s day within 15 days of completion of admissions in a very friendly atmosphere. He told the faculty to put up a notice prohibiting seniors from entering junior classrooms. There should also be a vigilance committee.
