VISAKHAPATNAM: A 17-year-old youngster from Visakhapatnam has allegedly duped out of Rs 14 lakh by a girl whom he had befriended on Facebook.
The incident came to light when the teen approached the cyber crime police on Monday.
According to police sources, the teenager, son of a retired railway employee, befriended a girl on Facebook and chatted with her frequently over the past few months.
After a few weeks, the girl apparently cooked up a story that she was in urgent need of money. Believing her, the youth transferred a total of Rs14 lakh to her from his father's account, whose confidential details he knew. In all, he made 34 transactions, with the amounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000.
All the transactions were done between 10.40 am to 12 pm on Sunday.
Sources said that youngster’s father had deposited all his retirement benefits of around Rs 14 lakh in a bank recently. It is learnt that the account to which the youth transferred the money was located in Kolkata. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
