VIJAYAWADA: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly voiced concerns over the increasing number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the difficulties they face, particularly in accessing education.
The legislators urged the State government to implement a programme similar to the pulse polio immunisation drive to identify and treat children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
During the Question Hour on Thursday, legislators discussed the matter for nearly 20 minutes, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention.
Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu emphasised the need for action on the issue.
Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav responded to questions raised by Yelamanchali MLA Sundarapu Vijaya Kumar and GD Nellore MLA Dr VM Thomas.
The Minister explained that early diagnosis and treatment of autism symptoms in children can lead to significant improvements.
However, delayed treatment can result in greater challenges and less progress.
He also acknowledged the difficulties faced by parents in accessing specialised training for their children, as most therapy must be provided by trained professionals.
Some children with partial improvements may struggle to integrate into regular schools, requiring placement in special education institutions.
Additionally, those with more severe cases may experience intellectual disabilities, necessitating ongoing support in daily activities.
The Minister noted a rise in ASD cases following the COVID-19 pandemic, attributing the increase to a lack of stimulation during lockdowns.
He shared that 34 District Early Intervention Centres and 679 Bhavitha Centres have been set up across the State to support early diagnosis, screening, and inclusive education for children with special needs.
MLAs Vijaya Kumar, Thomas, and other leaders underscored the urgency of government intervention to address the challenges faced by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, citing a lack of awareness and trained personnel as major obstacles.
