VISAKHAPATNAM: The southwest monsoon entered parts of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, advancing into Rayalaseema region, even as heatwave conditions continued across several districts of the State.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into the remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining regions over the few days.
According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), the monsoon is likely to gradually spread across most parts of the State by mid-June. Last year, the southwest monsoon entered Andhra Pradesh on May 26.
The IMD stated that the monsoon has further advanced into additional parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, the Bay of Bengal and northeastern States.
Intermittent dry spells are likely during season
Lower-level southwesterly winds are currently prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, creating favourable conditions for further monsoon progress.
APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said rainfall during the June-September monsoon season is expected to be near normal in some districts, above normal in parts of Coastal Andhra, and below normal in several districts of Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra. He noted that intermittent dry spells or ‘monsoon breaks’ could occur during the season.
The seasonal outlook indicates above-normal rainfall in Eluru, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu and Prakasam districts.
