NEW DELHI: The CBI on Wednesday initiated a preliminary inquiry into alleged “irregularities” committed during the renovation of the new official residence of CM Arvind Kejriwal. The agency will probe whether the renovation work was carried out in accordance with established norms. It will file an FIR based on prima facie evidence after completing the initial probe.
The anti-corruption branch of the CBI sent a letter on Monday, requesting all documents and records related to approvals, funding sanctions, tender documents and bids submitted by contractors for the renovation work. The CBI will also probe potential “misconduct” by unidentified public servants of the Delhi government in connection with the construction, sources said.
The CBI has sought additional documents concerning the approval of building plans and requests from the client for high-end specifications like modular kitchens, marble flooring and other ornamental work. The agency has also sought records related to payments made by the PWD to the contractor, AK Builders, and the project consultant. It is alleged that the money was disbursed in six instalments between September 9, 2020, and June 2022.
Meanwhile, the AAP has labelled the investigation as politically motivated. The ruling party contended that this development is part of the BJP’s efforts to obstruct the AAP from serving the people. The newly renovated CM’s camp office covers an area of 5,000 sqmt.
Reportedly, a sum of Rs 44 crore has been spent on the renovation. According to documents, the total expenditure includes Rs 11.30 crore on interior decoration, Rs 6.02 crore on stone and marble flooring, Rs one crore on interior consultancy, and Rs 2.58 crore on electrical fittings and appliances. An additional Rs 2.85 crore was allocated for the fire-fighting system, Rs 1.41 crore for wardrobe and accessories fitting, and Rs 1.1 crore for kitchen appliances.
