WHILE poets dominated this year’s Sahitya Akademi awards by bagging eight of the 24 literary awards, Vaidehi, the well-know Kannada poet and short story writer, was honoured for her collection of short stories in Kannada.

Jess Fernandes won the year’s Sahitya Akademi award for Konkani poetry.

Vaidehi, who hails from Dakshina Kannada, is known for the strong feminist tones of her writing and its encounter with patriarchy. Her work has been characterised as post-modernist.

Praduman Singh Jindrahia won the poetry award for Dogri, while Kailash Vajpeyi got the award for Hindi and Puviarasu for Tamil.
