BANGALORE: The Corps of Detectives (CoD) is all set to metamorphose into a sleek and efficient force which will focus more on prediction and prevention of crime rather than just investigate it.

Director-General of Police of CoD, D V Guruprasad, has submitted a proposal through the DG&IGP to the government for revamping CoD and reconstituting it as Criminal Investigation Department (CID), an apex detective agency in the State.

Sources in the police department told Express that the State government too was keen on constituting the CID and it the transformation is likely to be completed by June.

Sources said that the proposed CID setup would have seven specialised units: CoD (Corps of Detectives), Forest Cell, SCRB (State Crime Records Bureau), SCIB (State Crime Intelligence Bureau), Technical Support Unit, Detective Training School and CCC (Crime Command Centre).

The existing SCRB would work under CID and the technical support unit will have Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Cyber Crime wing and Fingerprints Bureau to support the police investigations.

Specialised units like SCIB and CCC, the first of its kind in India, would gather crime intelligence and command crime investigating agencies all over the state. A special software will help the department collate information and predict criminal activity.

The CID’s Crime Intelligence Bureau would have six regional bureaus in all six ranges. Six SPs would be posted in every region and it would also have one CID inspector in every district.

The move will enable the agency to investigate and interrogate criminals on its own and get in touch with other State CIDs for exchanging information about criminal activities.

If the government approves with the proposal, Karnataka will get an effective crime fighting agency, on the lines of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

An IPS officer said the agency would strive to uphold and enforce the law through impartial and expeditious investigation of cases. “We shall also strive to build Criminal Intelligence System and assist police units in curbing organised crime,” the officer said.

CoD was set up in the early 70s during the Devraj Urs government and had replaced the CID. It had special squads to deal with homicide, burglary, fraud, firearms and counterfeit currency, dacoity and an anti-dowry cell.

The agency has investigated sensitive cases transferred from other police agencies for the past 35 years.
