SHIMOGA:  The tiger captured in a farm at Esur village in Shikaripur taluk on Sunday evening is now doing well in Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari.

DCF (Wildlife) Ravikumar told Express on Monday that the Forest Department officials were in discussions if the feline should be kept in the safari or returned to the forest.

The chances of the tiger staying permanently in the safari are slim. Its age is being ascertained. If it is an old tiger, it may remain in the safari. The final decision depends on its age and health condition, he stated.

The tiger looked tired after its conflict with forest officials while evading capture as hundreds of people attempted to scare the tiger which was hiding in a farm by hurling stones on it. No visible wounds were found on the big cat and veterinary doctors have been keeping a tab on its health, Ravikumar said.

On whether the animal was traced during the tiger census, he said, some traits of the tiger are considered while conducting the census. If the tiger was spotted, its stripes would be kept in mind.

If it was not visible, the census would be carried out on the basis of the way in which tiger preyed and its steps, the DCF added.
