BANGALORE: In a yet another embarrassment to the ruling BJP, its MLA Y Sampangi (KGF) was arrested by the Lokayukta police on Friday after which the Lokayukta Special Court remanded him in judicial custody.

He will remain in judicial custody till the court completes recording statements of the two witnesses including Hussain Muyeen Farooq (complainant) and Arun Kumar. The sitting MLA was arrested by the Lokayukta police on January 29, 2009 after he was trapped while accepting bribe of Rs 50,000 in cash and Rs 4.5 lakh by cheque at the Legislator’s Home from Farooq. Sampangi was accepting the bribe to close a criminal case against Farooq and get the police to submit a B report on the same.

Lokayukta Special Court judge N K Sudheendra Rao remanded Sampangi to judicial custody as he prima-facie found him violating bail conditions. The court said Sampangi will be in judicial custody to prevent him from tampering with evidence and threatening witnesses.

Farooq had brought to the notice of the court that he was being harassed by the MLA and his men for registering a case against Sampangi. The court had heard this earlier and had reserved the orders for Friday, said Pramod Chandra, public prosecutor of Lokayukta.
