Two candidates from the state — Yashas R and Snehal Rayamane — have made it to the top 100 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam, the results of which were announced on Friday.
For Snehal (28), the decision to wait for another year to live the Great Indian Dream paid off. She notched up an impressive 77th rank.
According to her father Professor A S Rayamane at Bangalore University’s Geography Department, Snehal had secured 789 rank last year. “This year, she has secured 77th rank and is undergoing coaching in Faridabad. She studied in Dharwad till Class IV and then at Vidyaniketan Public School till Class X. She later joined Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College in V V Puram, and then Christ College for her BA, where she won a gold medal”. Before her selection in the UPSC this year, Snehal was teaching as an assistant professor at Maharani’s College, before completing her M.Sc in Psychology.
Suman D Pennekar (28), a qualified Ayurvedic doctor, started preparing for the UPSC since 2009. This year, she has secured 126th rank. She won a scholarship that helped her get coached in New Delhi. “My main goal is to improve the conditions in rural India, which I have experienced first-hand”, said Suman, who hails from Beedi, a village in Belgaum.
Yashas, who secured 237th rank last year, cleared the exam with 75th rank this time. Other rank holders from Karnataka, include Anup Shetty (140), Preeth Ganapathy (161), Tripti Bhat (165), Amit Kumar (266), Rashmi (429), Shilpa Nag (434), Amitha J (468), Varun B R (590), Vivek (642), Rakshitha K Murthy (668), Arun B (675), Jayaramegowda R (729), Samrat Gowda D S (739), Lohiteshwar J (783), Manjunath A Kanamadi (900) and Kalmeshwar Shingenavar (937).
The mother of a six-year-old child, Shilpa has been juggling with motherhood and UPSC preparation. “I missed a rank by a narrow margin last year. But I am satisfied this time. I may get allotted the revenue service. Still, I am giving it another shot this May 26,” Shilpa said.
As many as 13,092 candidates were qualified for the main written exam held in October, of which 2,674 were selected for the personality test conducted in March-April. Finally, 998 candidates have been recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other central services against 1,091 vacancies.
