1 Killed as 2 Groups Clash in Jewargi; Section 144 Clamped

GULBARGA: One person was killed and several injured in a group clash at Ijeri village of Jewargi taluk on Monday morning.

Gulbarga Superintendent of Police Amit Singh told Express that following the incident, prohibitory orders under section 144 were clamped in the village till Tuesday evening and if necessary, it would be extended.

The deceased has been identified as Lakshman (36), son of Bhimshya. His body was handed over to the relatives after postmortem. In all, 35 people have been arrested and the situation is under control, the SP said.

Sources said trouble broke out when the deceased Lakshman went to fetch water from a public tap near his house on Monday morning. The quarrel, which started over water, turned into a group clash.

Both the groups started pelting stones at each other.

Lakshman, who was pelted with stones and attacked with lethal weapons, collapsed and died on the spot.

Angered over the death, people started pelting stones on houses. Three people including a woman were seriously injured and were shifted to Gulbarga Government Hospital. The SP and DC N V Prasad visited the spot.

Seer of Karuneshwara Mutt Siddalinga Swamiji visited the spot and under his leadership, activists of Sri Rama Sene and Vishwa Hindu Parishat protested by blocking the road. The seer called for Ijeri bandh on Tuesday demanding treatment to the injured, compensation to the kin of the deceased and the arrest of the accused. Former MLA of Jewargi Doddappa Gowda Patil Naribol has demanded a compensation of `5 lakh to the kin of the dead.
