2 Undertrials Killed in Mangaluru Jail; Use of Lethal Weapons Baffles Police

Express News Service

MANGALURU:  Madoor Isubu (45), said to be underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s aide, was among two undertrials hacked to death during a clash between two groups in the district jail in Mangaluru on Monday morning.

The other deceased has been identified as Ganesh Shetty (46), a rowdy sheeter. The two groups belonged to Isubu and another inmate Sharan of Akashbhavan.

Sharan was jailed for his alleged involvement in the murder of auto driver Farooq in 2008 and KVG Medical College manager Ramakrishna Bhat in 2011.

The hostilities between the two groups had intensified in recent days and threatened to spin out of control. Observing this, district jail superintendent B T Obaleshappa shifted Sharan to another jail two days ago and was set to shift Isubu too.

However, a quarrel broke out between members of the two groups during breakfast at around 8 am on Monday. During a heated argument, undertrials belonging to Sharan’s gang attacked Isubu with lethal weapons, dealing him blows on his head. Ganesh Shetty, who belonged to Isubu’s gang, tried to rescue him, but also received severe head injuries.

Though Isubu and Ganesh were shifted to a hospital, they succumbed to injuries.

Undertrials Pradeep, Umesh, Yuvaraj, Shobharaj, Nitesh, Iqbal, Asif and a police constable were also injured. Sources say Sharan may have got directions to kill Isubu from another underworld element Vicky Shetty, who operates from Australia.

Police Commissioner

S Murugan told reporters it was not clear how the inmates got hold of weapons and added that it will be known after an inquiry.

Isubu faces 27 cases, including seven for murder. Police are also looking into his possible terror links. Ganesh Shetty, who is convicted in a murder case, had escaped when he was being shifted to a jail. He was caught in Nepal in 2011.
