BENGALURU: Over 2,070 villages across the state with a population of 200 or more have no graduates.
This is as per a recent survey conducted across 30,000 villages by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. The findings were forwarded to the Development Commissioner who sent it to the Department of Collegiate Education.
The list of villages was released by the Department of Collegiate Education and it has mentioned efforts to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) that the department has taken like identifying those who have enrolled for higher education and discontinued later.
In this regard, the department organised a video conference with principals of leading colleges of all the 30 districts and appointed them as chief nodal officers. Principals of taluk colleges have been appointed as taluk level nodal officers.
Meanwhile, the department has instructed the nodal officers to depute one lecturer for an official visit to each village mentioned in the list. The lecturers have to collect data on the number of candidates who have cleared the second PUC but not enrolled for higher education and also the number of candidates who have enrolled for higher education and discontinued.
As per the list, Kolar district tops the list with 225 villages without graduates, followed by Tumakuru (193), Hassan (171) and Uttara Kannada (164).
Villages in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, Mysuru, Shivamogga too figure in the list. Bengaluru Urban (south-north) has 38 such villages whereas Bengaluru Rural has 75.
Dakshina Kannada district, however, is not mentioned in the list.
When asked about this, Director of the Department of Collegiate Education Sowbhagya said, “This is what we received from the Development Commissioner though e-mail.”
