MANGALURU: A plastic manufacturing unit located at Ganjimutt near Bajpe was gutted in fire in the wee hours of Tuesday. The loss is estimated around Rs 20 crore. The reason for the fire is said to be electric short circuit.

Moha Packaging Company is an export-oriented unit and is owned by Mohammed Haneef and two others.
A huge quantity of petrochemicals stocked at the unit for use in manufacturing of plastic fanned the fire. Machinery, finished plastic products and bulk products ready for export were all gutted.

The fire personnel from Kadri who rushed to the spot put out the fire after battling it for three hours.
When contacted, Chief Fire Service Officer Shivashankar T N said they got a call around 2.45 am. “About 16,000 litres of water was used and we managed to douse the fire by 6am,” he said.

No fire unit
This incident in the plastic unit located in Export Promotion Industrial Park brings the focus back on the need for setting up a separate fire station at Ganjimutt area. As there is no fire station there, fire vehicles need to go either from Mangaluru or from Moodbidri. Though there was a proposal by the district administration to set up a fire station, it has only remained on paper.
