BENGALURU: The state government on Tuesday agreed to various demands put forward by transport associations who had protested outside the office of the Transport Commissioner on Tuesday. The major demand — not to insist on speed governors for old vehicles and vehicles used to transport passengers weighing less than 3.5 tons, has been agreed to by the Transport Department, association members said. “There are many issues with external fitment of speed governors. We have letters issued by automobile manufacturers with us which state that the fitment of such devices would void the warranty as well as damage the vehicle. This was raised with the Transport Department which has agreed to waive the requirement for old vehicles and passenger vehicles less than 3,500 kg in weight,” said R K Holla, president, Bangalore Tourist Taxi Operators Association.

No hike in automation charges

In addition, the Department has also agreed to waive off some of the increased automation charges which had been promised in April this year. While the proposal is lying with the Finance Department, some of the charges can be waived unilaterally and this will be done, Holla said.On the topic of interstate agreements which would save commercial vehicles from Karnataka a lot of money in entry fees, officials are learnt to have assured that the issue will be discussed at a Southern India level meeting soon.
