BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday directed the state government not to restart pumping of treated water to Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts from KC Valley project.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice R Devdas passed an interim order directing the state government not restart pumping of water till next date of hearing.

This was after hearing a public interest litigation challenging the project on the ground that it is affecting the health of local people as the untreated water is polluting the ground water.

The counsel of the petitioner argued that the water is being supplied to the districts will affect the 50 Lakh people. The government advocate justified the project stating that the necessary procedures have been followed before launching the project and to protect the ground water.

The project is aimed to fill the lakes of drought hit Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts with treated water from the KC valley.

The pumping of water was stopped from July 13, after froth was found in the water following heavy rain. However, the government planned on restarting pumping after flushing the pipes.
