BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday stayed the investigation in connection with the FIR registered against BJP Lok Sabha member Tejasvi Surya by the Haveri CEN police, on the charges of spreading false news regarding the suicide of Rudrappa, a farmer in Haveri district, with an intent to promote communal disharmony.

Justice M Nagaprasanna passed the interim order after hearing the petition filed by Surya, questioning the legality of the FIR registered under Section 353(2) of the BNS, 2023, based on a complaint filed by Sunil Huchanna on November 7. The court observed that prima facie, there are no ingredients to attract the alleged offence invoked against Surya.

It was alleged in the complaint that the suicide of Rudrappa was allegedly on account of loan issues and not due to the claim of the Waqf Board over land. Further hearing is adjourned to December 4.
