MYSURU: A tragic accident marred Christmas celebrations near the iconic Mysuru Palace on Thursday night, when a helium cylinder used by a balloon vendor exploded near Jayamarthanda Gate, killing the vendor on the spot and injuring four others.
The incident occurred around 8.30pm, while thousands of visitors had gathered at the palace premises to enjoy the annual flower show. A musical concert by popular singer Vasuki Vaibhav was also under way just 100 metres from the accident scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the blast occurred when a balloon vendor was using a helium cylinder to fill balloons near Jayamarthanda Gate. The impact of the explosion caused panic among the large crowd, leading to chaos and a temporary stampede-like situation. There was tension in the area for nearly half-an-hour as people dispersed in fear, unsure of what had happened.
The balloon vendor, an unidentified man estimated to be around 40 years old, died on the spot. His identity and whereabouts are yet to be ascertained by the authorities.
Four passersby who were walking near the palace sustained injuries, and were immediately shifted to KR Hospital and JSS Hospital for treatment. They have been identified as Lakshmi from Bengaluru, Manjula from Nanjangud, Shahina Shaber from Kolkata, and Kotresh Gutte from Ranibennur, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar confirmed that the blast resulted in one death, one grievous injury, and three other injuries. The five affected individuals include two men and three women, including tourists and local residents, she said.
Following the incident, the concert was immediately stopped, and the crowd was dispersed as a precautionary measure. Traffic on the busy road opposite the palace and exhibition grounds was temporarily halted to facilitate emergency response.
Police, fire personnel, a forensic team, dog squad and an anti-bomb squad were deployed to investigate the cause of the explosion and rule out any foul play. Officials stated that further details are being gathered, and a detailed investigation is under way. The incident has raised concern about safety measures involving helium cylinders in crowded public spaces, especially during major public events.
