DAVANAGERE: A 41-year-old woman was gang raped by ten people in the Basavapattna police station limits on June 3. According to the police, the woman had a quarrel with her husband and was on her way to her parents' home when the incident occurred.
She was forcibly inebriated with alcohol by the accused and taken to an isolated area where she was gang raped. The accused also videographed the incident and later deleted it.
The Basavapattna police immediately swung into action on receiving the complaint and arrested the accused, and are currently investigating the matter.
One of the rapists recorded entire crime
When the video of the sexual assault went viral in the village, the survivor filed a complaint at the Basavapattana police station, naming the accused. All of them were picked up by the police in swift action. The accused have been identified as Chataki Nagaraj, Istri Nagaraj, Madhu, Arjun, Basavantha, Kunduru Maruthi, Manu, Jogi Sunil, Pradeep and the minor boy of Channagiri taluk.
Superintendent of Police Shekhar HT told TNIE, “An incident of a gang rape of a middle-aged woman by a group of 10 people, including a minor boy, was reported from the Basavapattana police limits. The victim has alleged in the complaint that when she was standing near a shop on June 3, a boy came near her and offered a lift to her maternal home. He offered her a cold drink and after drinking it, she fell unconscious. Later, she was taken to an isolated place and was gang raped.”
He said, “After the photo of the gang rape went viral in the village on June 8, the woman came to the police station with her relative and filed a complaint at around 12.30 am on June 9. The police intensified the investigation and arrested all the ten people, including the minor. They were produced before court and sent to judicial custody.” As the accused deleted the video of the incident, a destruction of evidence case too has been filed against them.
