THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: L Krishna Pillai, Union Secretary of Commerce and Industries, will be the new Home Secretary of India.

With his appointment, one more Keralite has been elevated to a key post in New Delhi.

Pillai, who belongs to the 1972 batch, is the seniormost IAS officer in Kerala cadre and had served the state in several key positions. He has been on deputation to the Union Government since April, 2004. Before taking over as Secretary, Commerce and Industries, Pillai served as the Additional Secretary and Special Secretary in the same dept. He had served as Joint Secretary in the Home Department during 1996- 2001. While A K Antony was the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pillai served as his Principal Secretary. The key posts like Cabinet Secretary, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, National Security Advisor, Secretary to the President, Foreign Secretary and Lok Sabha Secretary- General are being held by Malayali officers in New Delhi.

G K Pillai’s wife Sudha Pillai, who is also a 1972 batch IAS officer, is serving as Union Labour Secretary.
