THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of the Thekkady boat mishap that claimed 45 lives, the Cabinet has decided to implement the rules for implementing the Inland Vessels Act. Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after the Cabinet here on Wednesday that the R.M.Nair Committee, appointed by the government to frame the draft rules, had submitted its report recently. The committee was appointed as per the recommendations of the Justice Pareed Pillai Commission that probed the Thattekad boat tragedy.

Achuthanandan said that all security norms meant for tourist boats would be strictly enforced.

The government has already written to the High Court seeking the services of a sitting judge to probe the boat mishap. Strict action would be taken on the basis of the inquiry report on the Thekkady mishap, he said.

Assistance to DHRM attack victims: The Cabinet has decided to give an assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the family of Sivaprasad who was murdered by DHRM activists at Varkala. A compensation of Rs one lakh would be given to Ashokan and Rs 50,000 to Sabu who were attacked by DHRM activists.

The Chief Minister said that the people of the state should isolate such organisations.

The police are conducting a detailed probe into the activities of the DHRM, he said.

Wayanad District Collector: The Cabinet has decided to appoint A Jayathilak as the new District Collector of Wayanad.

The Cabinet also decided to give Rs one lakh to actor Adoor Santha Devi as assistance for her treatment.

The Bakel Resorts Corporation would be given 75 cents of revenue land at Hosdurg on a 30-year lease for constructing water treatment plant.

The Cabinet also decided to appoint differently abled persons in 30 posts of class-one and class-two of ficers, Achuthanandan said.

ASEAN Agreement: Achuthanandan said that the statement of Commerce Minister Anand Sharma regarding the ASEAN free trade agreement was an attempt to hide the real issues. Such attempts would be rejected by society, he said.
