THIRUVANATHAPURAM: THE State Government is allegedly delaying the fifth round of allotment of medical seats for helping private medical colleges. The allotment is being delayed to help the six medical colleges which entered into an agreement with the government.

These colleges run by the members of the Kerala Private Medical College Managements Association were waiting for the verdict of the Supreme Court in the appeal filed by them against the High Court order that they were not entitled to make admissions to management quota seats on the basis of the rank-list prepared in pursuant to the entrance test. The Supreme Court is scheduled to take up the case on Wednesday. The Supreme Court had not stayed the High Court order.

Under the agreement with the government, these colleges have to fill 50 percent of the seats from the ranklist prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) on the basis of a common entrance test conducted by it. Of the rest, 35 percent are set apart as management quota and 15 as NRI quota seats. The consortium conducted the entrance test for the 35 percent management quota seats.

The present delay in conducting the fifth round of seat allotment was affecting the admissions to vacant seats in government medical colleges. This is detrimental to the interests of students as the deadline set by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for completing admissions is September 30.
