NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) will open the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) Institute on the airport premises on September 1.The AME institute offers courses in aircraft maintenance and repair.

C G Krishnadas Nair, MD of CIAL said the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given approval to start AME courses under CIAL.

Electrical, Instrumentation and Radio Navigation connected with aircraft are included in the threeyear course, which include a six-month On Job Training (OJT).

The DGCA will conduct the annual examination. Semester examinations will be conducted by the institute itself. Successful students will get a certification of Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering from the DGCA.The students, after a few years of service as Aircraft Technician, can appear for the 4th Paper of the course (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer). The successful students will be issued with Fleet Licence Holder certificate, making them eligible for all types of repair and maintenance work of aircraft.

Stateof the art facilities

The AME Institute has a wellequipped computer lab, avionics lab and library. It has one Learget 25 type aircraft and two Iskara aircraft in its hangar. The proposed MRO unit will be another advantage to the students as no other AME school in the country has an MRO unit on the campus itself, CIAL sources claimed. The Institute will have three aircraft engines jet engine, piston engine and helicopter engine. A battery charging room was set up in accordance with the Civil Aircraft Inspection Procedure.

Eligibility

Two batches of 30 students each will be started initially. The eligibility for admission is Plus II with Mathematics and Physics with minimum 50 percent marks.

The admission will be held on the basis of marks in the qualifying examination and interview.

The successful students will get priority in recruitment at the CIAL.
