KASARGOD:  SENIOR Congress leader Kodoth Govindan Nair, 68, died at the Vellor Medical College Hospital around 1 am on Sunday. He was under treatment at private hospitals in Kochi for the past six months following cerebral ailments. He was shifted to the Vellor Medical College Hospital a few days ago.

He was former DCC president and a confidant of K Karunakaran. There was much controversy in the state when he was fielded by the erstwhile 'I' faction of the Congress, led by K Karunakaran, as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha against Vayalar Ravi of the Congress. Karunakaran had to leave the Congress following the political controversy. He was the state vicepresident of the DIC which was formed by Karunakaran after he left the Congress. He was the state vicepresident of the NCP. After K Karunakaran rejoined the Congress, Kodoth Govindan Nair came back to the Congress and became KPCC general secretary. A member of the Kerala Public Service Commission from 1995 to 2001, he was also the member of the advisory committee of the CPCRI. Kodoth Govindan Nair is survived by daughters Vineetha and Saritha and brother Kodoth Narayanan Nayar. His wife Prasanna had died four years ago.
